Thank you for your interest in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). As our nation celebrates the250th Anniversary of its founding, the SAR is marking this historic milestone with commemorative events and programs throughout the nation. Who Is Eligible?
Membership in the SAR is open to men age 18 or older, of good character, who can prove direct lineal descent from a patriot who supported the cause of American independence. Qualifying patriotic service includes military, civil, or other documented acts of resistance in support of independence.
Your patriot ancestor may have served as:
- An officer, soldier, seaman, marine, militiaman, or Minuteman
- A Signer of the Declaration of Independence
- A member of a Committee of Safety or Correspondence
- A delegate to a Continental, Provincial, or Colonial Congress or Legislature
- A recognized patriot who performed documented acts of resistance to British authority
Family tradition alone is not sufficient. Membership is based on documented lineage and verified service. All applications must be supported by original or certified genealogical and historical evidence and are subject to formal review by the Society.
